Those in Dubai would already know this popular not-so-little restaurant in Dubai Mall next to The Aquarium right before you get to The Cheesecake Factory (again a famous spot for every person visiting Dubai – check out my review here). They have a branch in Box Park, Al Safa too which is currently closed for renovation probably. I have visited them several times both with friends as well as family and I should emphasise how the service, food and ambience appeals to me on a high level.
The one in Dubai Mall is mostly packed especially the outside seating area overlooking the aquarium, but the decor compensates for it by making you feel at home by giving it a friendly neighbours’s kitchen look. The space is cozy, casual and resembles the friendly emotion that you feel when entering a friend’s home.
The menu gives an East meets West kind of feel with cuisines ranging from both ends of the spectrum. They also have a long list of both sweet and savoury crepe options.
The common dishes we order are:
Chilli Cheese Fries
One of my ever favourite starters are these fries topped with chili con carne (a spicy sauce containing chili peppers, meat and other herbs), guacamole and sour cream. It sets the stage for the enticing eats to come but make sure you have company while ordering this as the portion size can be quite large.
Mamma Mia Burger – Double beef patties burger filled with fried egg, rocket leaves and spicy mayo sauce that comes with a side of cajun fries. A pretty decent burger but as they have only one burger in the whole menu, there’s room for improvement in here.
Markette Steak Frites
I wasn’t expecting much from this dish, as this is definitely not a steak house, but then again Markette impressed me with a delicious rib eye steak served with a classic mushroom sauce. A must-have if you ask me!
Hong Kong Style Kway Teow – This dish from the Asian side of the menu is a sure shot for any Asian food lovers – the soft and succulent beef tenderloin strips combined with stir fried veggies and chili jam was a perfect blend of savoury and sweet.
Chicken and Mushroom Penne in pink sauce
I always order an Italian dish if it’s on the menu and hence I had to give this one a try. It’s a very basic penne pasta in pink sauce although nothing memorable.
An insane “50,000” calories later and right before we slipped into a food coma, we asked for the bill while sipping on the refreshing Classic Mojito which was served in a steel tumbler which made it all better.
Markette’s food makes a more enduring impression, partly because servings tend to be so generous and so here goes a joyous whoop for this popular, always-packed restaurant with a quirky twist on a classic café-meets-farmhouse kitchen.
